Ched Evans Verdict: What Does It Mean For Survivors Of Sexual Offences?

I was going to make today’s post about encouraging young survivors to speak out if they’ve been abused, but on account of this news, and some of the reactions I’ve read about (from the horrific to the ridiculous), I wanted to give my tuppence worth. Sexual assault is a neighbouring issue to child sexual abuse and there is often overlap, where the victim is a child.

I urge you to think critically and not get swept up in media outrage perpetuated by people who perhaps haven’t thought the implications through. Regardless of your view, though, ALL survivors of sexual offences deserve to seek justice and support for what they’ve been through, and this case doesn’t change that and need not discourage it.

Love this Siobhan. I couldn’t agree more with everything you said. You also articulated some thoughts that I was having during the time this whole news story was huge that I wasn’t able to articulate myself, particularly about the potentially dangerous precedent this case sets regarding looking at the woman’s previous sexual history; it screamed of victim-shaming at the time to me, so it’s nice for you to add some extra context and depth to that line of thought. Keep up the good work 🙂

Thank you George! It’s good to know it makes sense; I felt flustered trying to get my point out there so that people don’t worry unnecessarily that this changes things. It’s important to try and be objective even in the face of emotionally charged news.
